What is user-centered design?

In simple terms, user-centered design is the method or process of creating a product or website focused on the needs of the end user.

User-centered design focuses on specific audiences and their typical behaviours. When considering a target audience, take into consideration the average users’ demographics and preferences. Research and user analytics can also help identify how users interact with your offering. For example, Google Analytics can be used to identify how many minutes or seconds a user spends on a particular page of your website, as well as what they click on. This data is helpful in narrowing down user preferences and behaviours, which can then inform future changes to design and development.

Design the solution

From raw ideas and concepts to complete design, UCD keeps the user front and center throughout the design and development process. As you progress through design, regularly loop back to the user needs you’ve identified. If an element of your product or service doesn’t help meet those needs, it probably shouldn’t be included.

Segment user data

It’s important to identify your target audiences and segment them. This will help you understand various customers’ needs and focus on providing each group with appropriate features and functionalities.

Evaluate the end result

At the end of every development cycle, reevaluate what you’ve created to ensure it possesses the features and functionalities your users need. Re-evaluate often until you achieve the desired result.
